Last night on FOX during the O’Reilly Factor we saw Reverend
Falwell debate with Nihad Awad, the Executive Director of the Center
on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) concerning the passing out of
religious tracts to the Indonesians as aid was given out to them. I
have offered some excerpts from the interview.
For some reason, CAIR seems to think it is a questionable deed that
Falwell has committed by putting out the Christian message while
giving people medical supplies and comfort. His statement is as such:
Awad:
"Our objection rises from the fact that Jerry Falwell
and others are trying to prey on the victims, the victims who are
suffering and hurting. Those people who are suffering, they have no
choice but to accept what you offer them."
Awad: "…Muslims revere, respect and hold Jesus in the
highest regard…"
Awad: "Well, I think knowing his background,
especially now, today, [he or we] try to win the hearts and minds of
the Muslim world and even not the Muslim world, everybody outside
the United States, his efforts has been divisive, his statements
have been offensive and inaccurate, so if..."
I will stop here and add my own opinion on the matter. First of
all, as Mr. Awad stated about Muslims not knowing about Jesus is
false, in one respect he is correct. Muslims do believe a Prophet
named Jesus walked the Earth. However, as stated in a
previous article of mine, the Jesus of Islam
is not the Jesus of Christianity. There are too many completely
opposite statements between the Koran and the Bible to allow any
amalgamation of the two tenets. Reverend Falwell was making that point
when he got cut off.
OK, Mr. Awad. Perhaps Reverend Falwell does have an agenda to share
his faith. But I have seen the many lawsuits CAIR has pursued all over
the nation because they believe Islam has been misrepresented, and if
I am correct in my understanding of your web site and full page ads
around the nation, you have tried to remove Islam from the deeds of
terrorists, am I correct? You desire to have people view Islam and
Muslims differently than terrorists, no? If I am wrong in my
assumption, please correct me.
However, do you NOT see the hypocrisy in stating that you view the
sharing of the Christian faith by Reverend Falwell as erroneous due to
what you said was his background? Or can we all assume that what you
said is correct and we can ALL judge according to ones background?
I can appreciate that. In fact, I think it entirely ironic that a
representative of CAIR would make that statement seeing as some former
officers and members of CAIR have been convicted for having ties to
terrorist groups.
I also find it ironic that CAIR has roots in the IAF, Islamic
Association for Palestine, does it not? That is a background worth
considering.
I also find it ironic that Reverend Falwell’s’ statement about
Islamic proselyte activities within our prison systems has become a
massive activity, even surpassing Christian efforts. Teaching Islam to
the oppressed and needy I see.
Or do you not think that people in prison, who have come from harsh
backgrounds and many who will never see the light of day due to their
criminal activity, are as oppressed and in dire need as the Muslims of
Indonesia? Because if it is a bad thing that Reverend Falwell did in
Indonesia, as you insinuated was an act of preying on the needy and
those who suffer and are hurt, then it is my belief that Islam has no
place in prisons where people are without hope for freedom, physically
hurt and spiritually needy. Tell me, Mr. Awad, what is the difference
between Christians preying on needy people in Indonesia, and Muslims
preying on needy people in America and elsewhere?
And if I am to take someone’s background to judge their actions Mr.
Awad then the harshest judgment would go to CAIR and its background,
which means I should be able to fully assess the actions and
intentions of CAIR due to its background and affiliations. Which is to
say has suspected terror ties in many Americans’ understanding?
Perhaps the same measure that you judge others by Mr. Awad has been
meted back to you. And if you dislike other people making assumptions
about Islam and Muslims due to their assumed or factual backgrounds,
my suggestion would be to not make those assumptions and accusations
against non-Islamic groups and individuals.
Because when the balances are weighed Mr. Awad, CAIR bears the
heavier burden of questionable backgrounds according to the means by
which you judge. And I believe we all agree with you on that aspect
and I feel Islam and the actions of CAIR will continue to be judged in
the manner of which you spoke. Judgment shall be meted by your
background and previous actions.
So please do not complain when it your turn in the court of public
opinion. After all, a background is a background.
