Pacific Justice Institute Pledges to Defend Objectors to Pro-Gay Training Visalia, CA - In response to a recent settlement between the ACLU and the Visalia Unified School District, the Pacific Justice Institute has pledged to represent all parents choosing to opt their children out of a mandatory pro-gay training program for district middle and high school students. As the settlement also requires district staff members to undergo mandatory pro-gay training, the Pacific Justice Institute has further pledged to represent any teacher or administrator who objects to attending the training sessions because of their sincerely held religious beliefs. The settlement came after the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the district resulting from an alleged "anti-gay harassment" of a student by a teacher. The mandatory student training will be developed by the controversial Gay-Straight Alliance Network, which reportedly has over 275 gay-straight alliance clubs in California. According to the ACLU, the "student trainings will be conducted 'peer-to-peer' by other students, and will eventually be made a part of the permanent curriculum." "Compliance Coordinators" will also be named to "help" parents, students and teachers. According to the ACLU, this settlement is a "model" for California school districts. "While the settlement uses the term 'mandatory' to describe this controversial program, California and federal laws respecting the rights of parents must be followed," said Brad Dacus, President of the Pacific Justice Institute. "It is especially important that the district accommodate and respect the objections of employees of religious faith, as well as those parents who wish to opt their children out of a course of instruction that is inconsistent with the children's moral or religious upbringing. We intend to legally challenge any implementation of this settlement that violates the rights of parents and teachers."
