Teachings of Islam
Muhammad's followers wrote down all of Allah's messages and put
them into one book called the Qur'an. Many of them also learned the
hadith, or words and actions of Muhammad. Collections of hadith are
called the Sunna.
The Five Pillars of Islam guide
the Muslim way of life. First, Muslims must pledge their faith to
Allah. Second, they must pray five times a day. Third, they must give
charity. Fourth, they must not eat or drink while there is daylight
during the Muslim month of Ramadan. Fifth, Muslims who can afford it
must make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once. Together, the Qur'an
and Sunna are the religious and social guidelines for the Islamic way
of life. Muslims also believe that the Jews' and Christians' holy
book, the Bible, is based on the word of God.
If this is
true, why do missionaries risk their lives to share the Gospel in
Muslim governed nations?
Why are the Qur'an and Sunna
important to Muslims?
Obviously
the author wants our children to affirm Muslim beliefs of Allah.
An
Islamic Way of Life
The Qur'an and the Sunna present the moral laws that Muslims live
by. These laws cover religious life, as well as such things as diet,
marriage and divorce. The laws also cover legal contracts, or
agreements. Unlike other societies of the time, women were given clear
rules for marriage. They were also given the right to an education. In
addition, women were able to control the money they made, to make
contracts, and to serve as witnesses in courts. Many of these laws and
rights are still in effect. However, the social customs in some
countries have overruled these laws.
